Almost as many people now come to work in the canton of Lucerne as leave it. The commuter balance has decreased from minus 5200 to minus 1200 between 2012 and 2022.

As Lustat Statistik Luzern announced on Tuesday, around 183,300 people commuted to their place of work in the canton of Lucerne in 2022. 27 percent commuted within their municipality of residence, 53 percent commuted to another municipality. 20 percent work outside the canton of Lucerne.

Overall, more people from Lucerne travel to work in another canton (37,100 in total) than come to work in the canton of Lucerne (35,900). However, this negative commuter balance has been decreasing since 2019, Lustat reported.

Lucerne residents who work outside the canton commute most frequently to the canton of Zug (10,900 people). The cantons of Aargau (6,800) and Zurich (5,700) follow in second and third place.

Aargau leads the ranking for commuters with 10,600 people. The cantons of Nidwalden (4700) and Schwyz (3900) follow in second and third place.
