Even several years after a storm, people still die as a result of the destruction. A study from North America puts the number of deaths after storms in the USA between 1930 and 2015 at 3.6 to 5.7 million people.

Storm Helene claimed numerous lives in the south-east of the USA at the end of September and beginning of October. New scientific findings suggest that thousands more deaths could occur in the coming years. This is because tropical cyclones cause increased mortality over a long period of time, according to a study published in the renowned scientific journal "Nature".

The researchers hypothesized about the reasons for the excess mortality. For example, the disasters could cause people to lose their jobs and thus their health insurance. The state could also lack money for medical facilities due to infrastructure repairs.
