Google Maps is introducing a function that allows users to report traffic incidents in real time to improve route planning.
Traffic jams, accidents and other obstructions can be quickly added during navigation via a notification window.
The feature is currently available on Android, but not yet enabled for Android Auto.
Google Maps now offers a new function that allows users to report traffic incidents in real time. The update is intended to enable more precise route planning and thus help reduce traffic jams.
As the tech portal Smartdroid reports, Google has integrated a new reporting function into its map service on Android devices. Drivers can now easily report various types of obstructions during active navigation, including traffic jams, accidents, roadworks, closed lanes, breakdowns or objects on the road. These messages are displayed directly on the map and are therefore available to all users who are driving or planning the same route.
How the new reporting function works
The function is easy to use: users simply have to tap on the speech bubble symbol with a plus sign on the right-hand side of the screen. A window will then open with the option "Add report". Here, road users can choose from various categories of incidents. Before sending the message, they also have the option of checking it or changing it if necessary.
Particularly practical: Google Maps also shows the number of reports for a specific event. This allows users to see at a glance how many other drivers have already reported the incident. This increases the reliability of the information and makes it easier to assess the traffic situation.
Rollout for Android Auto still pending
While Android users are already benefiting from the new function, drivers using Android Auto still have to wait. Google has not yet announced an exact date for the introduction of the function on Android Auto.
With this innovation, Google continues to focus on improving navigation by integrating real-time data. The ability to report current disruptions directly and quickly could help to manage traffic on busy routes more efficiently and minimize congestion in the future.
