Four people, including the owners of the house, have been arrested. The building reportedly collapsed on Friday evening. The cause is still unclear and an investigation has been launched. The rescue work in the ruins has now been completed, Yerlikaya announced.
The incident once again raises questions about building safety in Turkey. On Tuesday night, 78 people died in a fire at a ski hotel in the north-western province of Bolu. Following the disaster, accusations were made that fire safety had been neglected. And experts blame the high number of victims, officially more than 50,000, caused by the earthquakes in 2023 on deficiencies in the building structure, among other things.
