Foot-and-mouth disease is back in Europe. In Brandenburg in northern Germany, three water buffalo have died from the viral disease, as the state agriculture minister announced on Friday. It is the first outbreak of the animal disease in Germany since 1988.

According to the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (FSVO), foot-and-mouth disease is one of the most devastating viral diseases of farm animals. It can affect all cloven-hoofed animals on a farm in a very short time and cause serious economic damage. The disease is not dangerous for humans.

The last case in Switzerland was recorded in 1980 in the canton of Bern. The disease raged in Switzerland several times in the mid-1960s.

According to the FSVO, the disease occurs regularly in Turkey, the Middle East and Africa, in many Asian countries and in parts of South America.
