The upgraded Bern station cannot be opened until the end of 2029. The construction work is taking longer than planned, as SBB, the regional railroad company RBS and the City of Bern announced to the media on Wednesday.

The previous plan was to open the new SBB underpass in mid-2028 and the Bern-Solothurn Regional Railways (RBS) underground station in mid-2029. The delay is due to the challenging geology of the building site, the complexity of the project and the fact that the construction work will be carried out during ongoing rail operations.

The impact of the delay on the project costs remains to be seen. Until now, SBB and RBS had estimated a total cost of CHF 1.1 billion.

The expansion is urgently needed because Switzerland's second-largest railroad station is reaching its limits. It is very crowded at peak times.
