"The police suspect that the café was burned down and (...) have arrested the perpetrator," it said. State media published photos showing the multi-storey building largely destroyed by the flames.
According to the police, a fire was reported late in the evening with many people trapped inside. Rescue workers were able to save seven people, eleven were found dead. According to state media, eyewitnesses said that the fire was so massive that nobody dared to try to rescue the trapped people.
There have been several fatal fires in Vietnam in recent years. Fire safety regulations are lax and the fire department is often poorly equipped. In 2022, 32 people died in a fire in a karaoke bar in a suburb of the economic metropolis Ho Chi Minh City.
