On Friday, the Basel-Stadt Court of Appeal acquitted two electricians of the charge of involuntary manslaughter. It did not consider them responsible for the death of a young woman who was trapped by an automatic window.

The second instance thus came to a different conclusion than the Basel criminal court, which had convicted the two of them of involuntary manslaughter in January 2023.

The victim, a 28-year-old woman, was fatally injured in her apartment in Basel in August 2019 while taking a smoke break at the window. The two electricians had previously converted the window and installed an automatic rain sensor. The Court of Appeal came to the conclusion that it could not be proven that the rain sensor installed by the two fitters was the cause of the fatal accident.
