The reason for this is the unusually warm weather and lack of precipitation in recent months, explained Kathy Hochul, the state's governor. The last time such a warning was issued was in 2002.
New York Mayor Eric Adams instructed public institutions to reduce water consumption. For example, vehicles such as buses, trains and cars should be washed less frequently. He also called on municipal parks authorities to provide less water for fountains and golf courses.
Artificial ponds and lakes should only be filled with water if the body of water is a habitat for fish or other animals, according to a list of measures. People in the affected areas are called upon to save water on a voluntary basis.
In total, the drought warning was issued for 15 regions of the state. According to the US government's drought monitor, 61 percent of New York State is unusually dry. In the neighboring state of New Jersey, there was already a drought warning on November 13.
