Shortly before the conclusion of the 16th UN Conference on Biological Diversity (COP16), delegates have agreed to set up a sub-committee to include indigenous peoples in future discussions and decisions on nature conservation. This was announced by the organizers on Platform X.

COP16 in the Colombian city of Cali was primarily concerned with the technical implementation of the global nature treaty adopted two years ago in Montreal as well as financing issues.

In 2022, around 200 countries committed in Montreal to place at least 30 percent of the world's land and sea areas under protection.
