The future of Patrouille Suisse is uncertain, as the Council of States committee has narrowly voted against its continued operation. Financial concerns are at the forefront, while a minority supports maintaining the squadron.
The future of Patrouille Suisse, the Swiss Armed Forces' aerobatic squadron, is uncertain. The Security Policy Committee of the Council of States (SIK-S) has voted by a narrow majority against its continued operation. With 6 votes to 6 and one abstention, the casting vote by President Andrea Gmür-Schönenberger (center/LU) was in favor of the rejection. This decision was announced by the parliamentary services on Friday.
Financial considerations in the foreground
The majority of the committee justified its decision with the high costs that would be incurred to maintain the F-5 Tiger fighter jets. In view of the Confederation's financial situation and the current global security situation, this additional expense could not be justified.
Importance of Patrouille Suisse for the Swiss Air Force
Despite the narrow decision, there is a strong minority within the Commission that considers the Patrouille Suisse to be an important flagship of the Swiss Air Force and is in favor of maintaining it.
Next steps in the decision-making process
The Council of States will next decide on the motion, which could determine the final future of the Patrouille Suisse.
