A popular initiative would have accelerated the expansion of renewable energies without neglecting sustainability. The collection of signatures for the petition entitled "Every domestic and renewable kilowatt hour counts!" has now been discontinued.

According to the communiqué issued on Tuesday, a great deal of additional effort would have been required to collect the necessary signatures in time. However, this support had become unlikely with the "yes" vote on the energy decree on June 9.

Specifically, the referendum would have wanted to enshrine in the constitution that the development and use of the potential of domestic renewable energies to improve energy efficiency is of national interest. Despite sympathy, the petition did not receive sufficient support, the initiators write.

The initiators had their sights set on the production of winter electricity and hydropower in particular. The initiative was launched in February 2023.
