An Italian cleaning lady accidentally disposed of an old mattress in which jewelry and cash worth around 50,000 euros were hidden.

According to a report in the daily newspaper "Tribuna di Treviso", the domestic help from the northern Italian town of Montebelluna was convinced that the heavily worn mattress could only be bulky waste. The woman therefore took the mattress from the garage of the owner, a pensioner, to the landfill.

What she didn't know was that the old lady had hoarded cash, family jewelry and credit cards in it as a "nest egg".

According to the report, the pensioner only noticed the disappearance of the mattress a few hours later. Her daughter immediately called the police, who, together with the local environmental agency, went straight to the dump. The search was initially unsuccessful, but after an hour the mattress was found in a garbage can - along with cash, credit cards and jewelry. Fortunately, everything was still there.
