Beijing justified the measure with the protection of national interests and security as well as the fulfillment of international obligations. The export restrictions apply to a total of 28 US companies.
According to the authority, several divisions of the defense companies Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and General Dynamics are affected. The Department of Commerce has placed a large number of these companies on a further list of "unreliable companies", according to a second announcement. This means that the companies can no longer invest in China, for example, and their high-ranking managers are not allowed to enter the People's Republic.
China has repeatedly taken measures against US arms manufacturers in the past. This is Beijing's response to US arms sales to Taiwan, which Beijing considers to be part of China's territory, although an independent government has been in power on the island republic for decades.
