  • Guests at the Bonbec restaurant in Bern have to pay four francs if they put their napkin in their plate.
  • The reason for this is that stains are difficult to remove.
  • According to GastroSuisse, the charge is legal.

The Bonbec restaurant in Bern has an unusual rule: guests who put their cloth napkin on their plate after eating have to pay four francs.

Maurice Bridel, co-owner of the restaurant, explains that many guests have dipped their napkins in sauces, for example curry sauce with turmeric.

These stains are difficult to remove and the napkins often have to be thrown away after cleaning. "A cloth napkin costs ten francs," Bridel told "20 Minuten".

To avoid this loss, the rule was introduced and is proving effective: In the last three months, only two guests have put the napkin on their plate. Both have reacted with understanding and apologized.

Fee is legal according to Gastro Suisse

In other restaurants owned by Bridel and his wife Christina, such as Restaurant Bay and Sua, such a regulation is not necessary, as no dishes with strongly coloring sauces are offered there.

Gastro Suisse confirms that charging the fee is legal, as it is clearly communicated on the menu.
