The Swiss Rabies Center has detected the rabies virus in a water bat found in the canton of Glarus. According to a statement from the canton of Graubünden, the animal was discovered back in September. Cases of rabies are rare.

The water bat was found in Mühlehorn in the municipality of Glarus Nord. This was announced on Monday by the Graubünden Office for Food Safety and Animal Health, which is also responsible for the canton of Glarus.

Switzerland is considered to be free of rabies in both domestic and wild animals, the statement continued. However, individual cases in bats could be rare. According to the press release, seven cases have been diagnosed in Switzerland since 1992.

The Grisons Office for Food Safety and Animal Health also wrote in the press release that sick and behaving wild animals should not be touched. Instead, the wildlife authorities should be informed. "There is no reason for the population to be alarmed", the canton added.
