Axpo is expanding in Poland. The energy supplier has acquired a biogas plant in the West Pomerania region. This produces energy from mainly agricultural waste.

Axpo announced on Tuesday that it plans to develop further biogas projects in the coming years. Poland is one of five European target countries for entry into the biogas market.

The newly acquired plant in the western Pomeranian village of Stare Slepce was previously owned by private shareholders, according to the statement. It is to be renovated and brought up to date in the coming months.

The plant, which has been in operation since the end of 2020, reportedly processes around 20,000 tons of agricultural substrates per year. This produces 6640 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity per year as well as organic fertilizer, which has a CO2-neutral footprint.
