According to police reports, at least 94 people have been killed after a petrol tanker exploded in Nigeria. Around 50 other people were injured, including women and children, police spokesman Lawan Shi'isu Adam told the German Press Agency.

The driver of the truck lost control of the vehicle on Wednesday night in the town of Majiya in the northern state of Jigawa.

According to Adam, numerous residents had gathered at the scene of the accident despite warnings from the police. The people had tried to siphon off the fuel leaking from the tanker. When the vehicle exploded shortly after the accident, there was therefore a high number of casualties, said the spokesman. Local authorities have scheduled a mass funeral for today.
