Anyone wanting to make the journey south on Monday had to be patient in front of the north portal of the Gotthard tunnel: By midday, traffic in the canton of Uri was already backed up for a length of eleven kilometers.

According to the TCS traffic service on X, the waiting time was one hour and 50 minutes. The highway was temporarily closed in both directions between Erstfeld and Amsteg in the morning due to a vehicle fire.

There had already been long waiting times before the Gotthard at the weekend. In the early hours of Saturday afternoon, the queue reached a length of 14 kilometers. There was also a traffic jam in front of the south portal.

Switzerland's second important north-south link was reopened to traffic on Friday, just in time for the start of the summer holidays in several cantons. The San Bernardino route had been interrupted for two weeks following storms in the southern Graubünden valley of Misox.
