Japan is Switzerland's third most important trading partner in Asia. During her talks with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa, Amherd exchanged views with her partners on the desire to update the 2009 free trade agreement as well as on prospects in energy and sustainability.
They also discussed the World Expo in Osaka 2025, at which the Swiss pavilion will be dedicated to life sciences, environmental protection and artificial intelligence, as announced by Amherd's Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS).
In an international context, the focus was on the global security architecture. The President of the Swiss Confederation thanked Japan for its commitment to the Ukraine peace conference at Bürgenstock NW.
The situation in North and South Korea was also discussed. Switzerland is a member of the neutral monitoring commission for the ceasefire in Korea. This has been monitoring compliance with the relevant agreement since 1953. Both partners paid tribute to the friendly relationship between Switzerland and Japan on the occasion of the 160th anniversary of bilateral relations.
Amherd's agenda also included a meeting with Japan's Defense Minister Minoru Kihara. A reception by Emperor Naruhito is planned for Thursday.
