Orio al Serio International Airport in Bergamo, 60 kilometers west of Milan, had to close on Tuesday. The reason: a tire on a Ryanair plane burst during landing.

During the landing of a plane that took off from Barcelona with more than 160 passengers on board at Italy's Milan-Bergamo airport, four tires burst. None of the passengers or crew members were injured.

This was announced by the Sacbo airport operating company. The aircraft is currently blocking the runway. The runway was also damaged, so that flight operations had to be suspended for the time being.

According to an initial reconstruction, the captain was able to keep the aircraft, which had taken off from the Spanish coastal city of Barcelona, on the runway after the four tires on the rear landing gear burst. According to the reconstruction, there was no major damage to the aircraft. According to Sacbo, the fire department intervened after the landing to evacuate the passengers and crew.

According to the operating company, passengers must be prepared for delays and flight cancellations. It is unclear when the airport will reopen. According to Sacbo, 450 meters of the runway are damaged and must first be restored.

Milan Bergamo Airport is one of three international airports around the northern Italian metropolis of Milan. Alongside Malpensa and Linate, it is the smallest. It is located around 45 kilometers from Milan and is used by low-cost airlines. Flights from German cities also arrive at the airport every day.
