Around a month and a half after driving a car into a crowd of people in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai, the driver of the car has been sentenced to death. According to reports in Chinese state media, the local court found that the 62-year-old had deliberately driven his car into a crowd of people training in front of a sports center on 11 November. As a result, 35 people lost their lives and 43 others suffered injuries.

The court also stated the motive for the crime: the perpetrator was dissatisfied with the subsequent division of assets following a divorce. The judges justified the death sentence for "endangering public safety by dangerous means" with the cruelty of the crime and its particularly serious consequences.

There have been several attacks in China this year in which men have attacked other people seemingly at random. Less than a week after the Zhuhai death drive, a man in Wuxi in eastern China killed eight people with a knife and injured others. Shortly afterwards, on November 19, a man drove his car into a crowd of people outside a school in Changde in the southern province of Hunan, injuring 30 people - 18 of them students.

Last Monday, a court in Hunan also sentenced him to death, according to state media. According to the judges, he acted out of frustration over family disputes and financial losses. The execution of his sentence was postponed for two years and can be commuted to life imprisonment for good behavior.
