Only 42 percent of banks worldwide disclose their financed CO2 emissions. European institutions are particularly transparent, as a study by the consulting firm Wavestone shows.

Financed emissions are greenhouse gas emissions that are made possible by loans or the mortgage business, for example. For example, when someone builds a house or buys a car with money from the bank.

Overall, there are major differences depending on the region. While 84 percent of banks in Europe publish these CO2 emissions, only 12 percent of banks in the USA do so. In Asia and the Pacific, every third bank discloses these figures.

346 banks worldwide were considered for the analysis. Only 16 percent of them have currently defined CO2 reduction targets for the emissions they finance.
