An apprentice bricklayer has died in a work accident on a construction site in Vétroz VS. The 18-year-old was hit by a part that fell from a crane.

The accident occurred on Wednesday when the workers were busy stripping formwork from a concrete wall, as the cantonal police reported on Thursday. For reasons as yet unexplained, a part of the crane became detached during the operation and subsequently hit a worker on the ground.

After first aid on site, the young man was flown by helicopter to the hospital in Sion with serious injuries. He died there in the course of the afternoon. The victim was an 18-year-old Swiss national.

The public prosecutor's office has launched an investigation in collaboration with the cantonal police to determine the cause of the accident.
