The 1500-tonne rock package above the Axenfluh gallery in Flüelen UR was blown up on Friday afternoon. Experts are currently inspecting the result with a helicopter.

The safety blasting was ordered due to rock movements, as the Federal Roads Office (Astra) announced in September. Following an inspection, it was decided to remove the potentially dangerous rock package.

A partial closure to non-motorized traffic has been in place since 24 September, as rocks could have become detached during the preparatory work. The Axenstrasse has been completely closed since September 29. On Thursday, Astra announced that the road is expected to reopen on October 13.
