According to the navy, their speedboat was carrying out engine tests in the port of Mumbai on the west coast of India when the accident occurred. There had been a malfunction in the engine, as a result of which the boat went out of control and collided with the ferry, which then overturned. Helicopters and ships from the navy and coast guard took part in the subsequent search and rescue operation. NDTV showed footage taken from the ferry. It shows the boat speeding towards the ferry and crashing into it with full force.

According to reports, the ferry "Neel Kamal" was on its way to Elephanta Island, about ten kilometers east of Mumbai, which is a popular tourist destination due to its historic caves, among other things.
