FC Lugano miss out on the top spot in the Super League. The Ticino side lose 2-1 at Young Boys, while St. Gallen and Sion end their negative streak.
Alan Virginius scored in the 77th minute after a counter-attack to make it 2:1 for Bern. Both teams had previously scored from the penalty spot, YB through Cedric Itten (19') and Lugano through Anto Grgic (33'). Shkelqim Vladi could have equalized with another penalty in the 95th minute, but the substitute Lugano striker shot over the goal.
After their fourth win of the season, YB are still ten points behind leaders FC Zurich, who drew 1-1 at Servette on Saturday. In the top 4, separated by just one point, are FCZ and Servette as well as Basel (4:1 in Yverdon) and Lugano.
Back in the top 6 is FC St. Gallen, who won 2-1 at Grasshoppers thanks to two goals from corner kicks. The team from eastern Switzerland had not won in six league games. GC go into the international break at the bottom of the table because FC Winterthur won 1-0 at home against Lausanne-Sport on Saturday.
FC Sion also managed to break free. Exactly three months after their last victory, they once again scored three points thanks to a 4-2 win against Luzern. Ilyas Chouaref was the Valais match-winner with two goals and a provoked own goal to make it 3-2 after just over an hour.
