Switzerland will lose one European Cup starting place in the 2026/27 season.
It currently only occupies 17th place in the UEFA five-year rankings and can no longer move up into the top 15 following Lugano's elimination from the Conference League. This means that in two years' time, Switzerland will only have four starting places in European competitions instead of the current five.
For the Swiss European Cup participants, the path to the league phase will also be significantly longer. The champions, who only have to survive one round next season to reach the Champions League, will have to play three rounds the season after next. The cup winners will also have to go through two more qualifying rounds to reach the Europa League phase.
The two Super League teams that qualify for the Conference League, including the runners-up who will still be allowed to play in the Champions League qualifiers next season, have three rounds to go before they reach the league phase.
