Valère Thiébaud from Neuchâtel is retiring from top-class sport. There are sporting and financial reasons for his departure.
Thiébaud made the decision after a lengthy injury break. The 26-year-old Frenchman was an integral part of the Swiss track foursome in the recent past. He won a diploma with the team at the Olympic Games in Tokyo and a silver medal with the foursome at the European Championships in Grenchen three years ago.
Thiébaud had also set himself the goal of taking part in this year's Games in Paris. The endeavor ended prematurely because the men's national team was unable to secure a quota place in Thiébaud's preferred disciplines of team pursuit and madison, not least due to several injury-related absences.
Ultimately, the financial situation was also a decisive factor in his decision to retire, especially as the cycle leading up to the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in three years' time has only just begun and it is very difficult to make a living as a professional track cyclist.
