Important news from Friday in athletics:
Pellaud straight into the 800m semi-finals
Of the three Swiss women in the 800 m preliminary heats, only Swiss champion Rachel Pellaud made it directly to the semi-finals. While Audrey Werro clearly missed out on the required top 3 place in her series, Valentina Rosamilia was unlucky. Partly because she was somewhat hampered in the final sprint, the athlete from Aargau finished 4th in her series, three thousandths of a second behind third place. Werro and Rosamilia will have the opportunity to advance to the semi-finals via the repechage round on Saturday morning.
Swiss record not enough
The Swiss mixed relay team over 4x400 m clearly undercut the Swiss record. However, the 3:12.77 of Charles Devantay, Giulia Senn, Lionel Spitz and Yasmin Giger was only good enough for 6th place in their preliminary heat and therefore not enough to reach the final. The Swiss preliminary heat was won by the Americans, who set a world record in 3:07.41.
