As feared, Manuel Zehnder suffered a serious knee injury against Italy at the Yellow Cup in Winterthur on Friday.
The 25-year-old playmaker of the Swiss national team tore the cruciate ligament, the medial collateral ligament and the meniscus of his left knee, as the Swiss Handball Federation announced after an MRI on Saturday.
This means that Switzerland will be without Zehnder at the World Championships starting on January 14. The national team's top performer will also miss his German club Magdeburg for several months. "This is incredibly hard for Manu," said national coach Andy Schmid regretfully.
Switzerland will face the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland in the preliminary round of the World Cup.
