Lugano will lose its lead at the top of the table. The Ticino side conceded a 2-1 defeat in St. Gallen and will have to make way for Basel or Lucerne at the top of the Super League on Thursday evening.

This time, Lugano were unable to secure three points with a late goal as in the last two rounds. On the contrary: they squandered the one point in stoppage time against St. Gallen, who played with unbridled energy. After the young Greek goalscorer Georgios Koutsias made it 1-0 by heading in a cross from Yanis Cimignani shortly before the end of the first half-hour, the Super League leaders came under increasing pressure.

St. Gallen, now unbeaten in eight home games, stepped up the pace and consequently equalized at the start of the final quarter of an hour. Captain Lukas Görtler's inspired pass found Christian Witzig, who scored on the volley from a turn and fired up the atmosphere in the St. Gallen stadium once again. In the at times dense fog, Görtler came very close to scoring the winning goal for the first time in the 85th minute with a shot off the post, before Witzig scored twice in the 94th minute after an assist from Jean-Pierre Nsame to secure the three points.

The frenetically celebrated victory kept FCSG at a distance from Young Boys and kept them in the top 6.
