Loïc Meillard is taking his good slalom form into the new year. The Frenchman is in 2nd place after the first run in Madonna di Campiglio.
Only Atle Lie McGrath was faster than Meillard - but all the more clearly. The Norwegian leads the rankings by 62 hundredths. McGrath and Meillard have already finished in the top three in the slalom three times this winter; both came second once and third twice.
The time gaps behind Meillard are extremely small. The Croatian Samuel Kolega, who has once again surprised in third place, is three hundredths behind the Neuchâtel native, who has lived in Valais for a long time, while the Austrians Manuel Feller and the German Linus Strasser are twelve and fourteen hundredths behind him.
The other Swiss skiers who have started so far have not been able to keep up with Meillard. Daniel Yule, three-time winner of the slalom on the Canalone Miramonti piste, and Tanguy Nef lost 1.6 seconds to McGrath. Marc Rochat has to worry about qualifying for the second run after four retirements and with a deficit of over three seconds.
Luca Aerni had to retire after threading. The skier from Bern was thus in prominent company. Olympic champion Clément Noël, the dominator of the first two slaloms this winter, the Norwegian Timon Haugan, the winner in Alta Badia, and the Austrian Marco Schwarz, the winner of the last slalom in Madonna di Campiglio, who is struggling to catch up after a long injury break, were also among the failed racers.
