HC Fribourg-Gottéron wins its first game under new head coach Lars Leuenberger 2-1 in Zug. The Fribourg team builds up a lot of morale for the Spengler Cup.
The Fribourg team trailed in central Switzerland until the 35th minute. Then Nathan Marchon and Jannick Rathgeb (53rd) turned the game around for Gottéron. Before the change of coach from Patrick Emond to Lars Leuenberger, Gottéron had lost two games without scoring a goal of their own (0:2 against Kloten and 0:4 against Rapperswil-Jona).
The second Swiss Spengler Cup contender fared less well: HC Davos lost 3:4 in Kloten after making up a 1:3 deficit. Davos lost its last four games in the National League ahead of its traditional tournament in the Old Year's week.
The ZSC Lions ended 2024 in first place, reclaiming the top spot in the table with a 4-1 home win over the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers because Lausanne only won 4-3 on penalties against the SCL Tigers in Langnau.
Two derbies were also played before Christmas: Lugano defeated Ambri-Piotta 4:1, and Biel lost to Schlittschuhclub Bern 0:3, with this score already decided after 17 minutes.
Ajoie lost 4-2 to Servette, with six of the seven games played in front of a sell-out crowd.
