  • Zurich is officially applying to host the next Eurovision Song Contest.
  • The city council is applying for a framework credit of CHF 20 million for the planning and staging of the event.
  • In addition to Zurich, Geneva and Basel are also in the running - Bern and Biel have also shown interest, a decision will be made in September.

The city of Zurich wants to host the next Eurovision Song Contest (ESC): it is officially applying to host the event. This was announced by the city council on Thursday.

Zurich has the right infrastructure and attractive venues with the Hallenstadion with the exhibition center, the Landiwiese on Lake Zurich and the Kongresshaus, the city explained. The city council is requesting a framework credit of CHF 20 million from the municipal council for the planning and implementation of the event.

Lucrative, but also expensive

In addition to the city of Zurich, Geneva and Basel are also in the running. Bern - together with Nemo's home town of Biel - has also shown interest in hosting the event, and the final decision will also be announced today (Thursday).

St. Gallen and Lucerne have decided not to bid, as they do not have the capacity for such an event. Hosting the ESC is extremely lucrative for tourism, with Liverpool 2023 generating almost CHF 62 million in revenue.

It will probably not be clear until September which city will host the next ESC. The decision will be made by the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SRG) together with SRF television and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
