The Olympic shocker "In the Waters of the Seine" narrowly missed out on first place in the list of the most successful non-English-language Netflix films. It almost caught up with the Norwegian monster movie "Troll" from 2022.

"In the Water of the Seine" aka "Under Paris" (original title: Sous la Seine) recorded 102.3 million views in around three months, as Netflix announced.

The Norwegian fantasy film "Troll" by director Roar Uthaug recorded 103 million views in the first three months after its release (December 1, 2022). It thus remains at the top of the Top 10 "Most Popular Films (Non-English)". Views are hours watched divided by the total running time - which in this case is (probably coincidentally) 104 minutes for both films.

Just in time for the Olympic Games

"In the Waters of the Seine" by director Xavier Gens with film stars such as Bérénice Bejo and Nassim Lyes was the Netflix hit of the summer and topped the Netflix charts for non-English-language films in many countries for weeks. The horror movie was a perfect match for the Olympic Games in the French capital. In this bloody shocker, a very dangerous shark is spotted in the middle of Paris before a triathlon competition in the Seine.

The film was released on June 5 and is still available to watch. However, Netflix - which says it currently has 278 million paying members in more than 190 countries - does not disclose any longer-term viewing figures than those for the first 91 days.

The streaming service has four top 10 best lists for different categories (for "Film" in English and non-English and for "TV" - meaning series - in English and non-English).
