Royal experts agree: Meghan and Harry's relevance is diminishing. So is the reference to the rest of the royal family merely a method or simply a calculation?

  • Prince Harry and Meghan have been criticized for deliberately overshadowing royal events in order to stay in the spotlight.
  • Experts predict that interest in the Sussexes could gradually wane, despite their strategic media maneuvers.
  • Meghan and Harry are focused on establishing themselves in the private sector, with their royal background often serving as a springboard.

In recent years, Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, have caused considerable turmoil in the British royal family. Since stepping down as senior royals, they may have rid themselves of the burden of the crown, but their need for subtle confrontations with the royal family seems unabated.

However, experts predict that Meghan and Harry are gradually losing the interest they have gained as a result.

Since Duchess Meghan (42) and Prince Harry (39) have been trying to stand on their own two feet, they have been pursuing an ambitious goal: they want to make a name for themselves in the private sector. But their royal background often seems to serve as the most important springboard.

"Have more tricks up our sleeve than we thought"

Critics even accuse them of deliberately overshadowing important royal events with their own announcements in order to stay in the conversation. However, these well thought-out maneuvers could soon lose their effect, says former BBC Royal Correspondent Jennie Bond.

"I don't think the Sussexes act randomly, and timing is often absolutely crucial," Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliam told the Daily Mail in spring 2024. A special event led him to make this statement: on the evening of March 14, the Duchess of Sussex surprised Royal fans. After four years, she made an unexpected return to Instagram, presenting her new lifestyle brand "American Riviera Orchard" and delighting her followers.

However, this premiere took place just minutes before an important speech by Prince William, 42, who was speaking in London at the Diana Legacy Awards. Although Prince Harry was also involved in the event, joining in digitally from his home in Montecito, the Sussexes didn't hesitate to announce the winner of the Archewell Foundation Digital Civil Rights Award at the same time.

"The Sussexes may have more tricks up their sleeves than we thought. They've been unpredictable for years, but they are predictable in one respect: the unerring timing of when they think it's advantageous to spread information. They don't do anything by accident," Fitzwilliam commented on what he assumed was a game for attention.

"Surely they're above that?"

Another eye-catching coincidence occurred recently at Trooping the Color. Shortly before the birthday parade for King Charles, 75, on June 15, Meghan presented two new products from her brand with celebrity support: a raspberry jam and dog biscuits.

But contrary to Fitzwilliam's "conspiracy theories", journalist Jennie Bond does not see any calculating intent behind this: "I really can't imagine them sitting there making plans to make announcements on the same day as a royal event. Surely they're above that?" she said, explaining, "It's true that there have been some strange coincidences in the timing of some of their announcements in the past. But I think they're becoming less and less important to the news in this country, and the royal family will take the spotlight every time."

After Harry set fire to the palace with his book Spare, priorities have since returned to the immediate royal family. The Sussexes' sensational revelations have taken a back seat and they now have to entertain themselves as royals in exile.
