- The new documentary "Dabu Fantastic - A Swiss musician goes all in" by Ivo Amarilli accompanies the dialect band on their way to their latest album - with all the highs and lows.
Dabu Bucher and Andreas Christen, alias DJ Arts, have been touring Switzerland for 15 years under the name Dabu Fantastic. Two friends who make successful dialect music together.
Two friends who, on the way to their new joint album "Ciao Baby, Ciao", might have wanted to throw in the towel and shout "Auf Nimmerwiedersehen!" more than once.
Bucher and Christen are the main characters in the documentary "Dabu Fantastic - A Swiss musician goes all in". Filmmaker Ivo Amarilli follows the band on the road to their latest record. It's a story about sex, arguments and new songs.
Suddenly, a new woman appears backstage
Dabu Bucher, the band's singer, says in the film that he has only sacrificed the last few years for the band. "That sounds so radical. But that's what I wanted too."
But now the 43-year-old suddenly wants something else - he has found a new girlfriend, is head over heels and is pulling up stakes in Zurich and moving to Bern. And often forgets that he is the leader of a band.
"I want to be in love and enjoy this woman as much as I can. It might be the last time in my life that something like this happens," says Bucher.
A lot happens within the band as a result. Drummer Simon Britschgi is worried and thinks Dabu Bucher is making a mistake. Because no sooner had he broken up with his girlfriend than a new woman appeared backstage.
Oliver Rosa: "It's cheap, it's shit"
Instead of spending time with his bandmates, the singer prefers to kiss his new girlfriend. He is often late and some people ask themselves: "What's wrong with him? What's he feeling?"
And then a bigger problem appears on the horizon: the new songs, written by the amorous Dabu Bucher.
The songs don't appeal, at least not to manager Oliver Rosa. He says: "I'm not feeling the album. It's all irrelevant, not cool and simply not Dabu. It's cheap, it's shit."
Shortly afterwards, the band and management meet. Five men sit in a circle. Words fly, insults are hurled - are they about to get into a full-blown argument?
"I don't want you to treat me like this, Oli," says Dabu Bucher. "I don't feel valued, even though I know you don't think that way about me. There's going to be an album now where I talk about fucking, because that's what's going on in my life right now."
DJ Arts stands by his friend and thinks that the new album is already very far along. Meanwhile, Oliver Rosa sticks to his opinion and dismisses the next track "as a pop song".
Dabu Bucher: "I'm 100 percent with you"
When the fourth song is also about being in love and fucking during the joint listening session, Oliver Rosa has had enough. In the meantime, however, Dabu Bucher has calmed down again. He laughs and says: "I'm 100 percent with you."
At this moment in the film "Dabu Fantastic - A Swiss musician goes all in", it is clear that these people have been working together for many years and fortunately, at least when it comes to music, they have a lot of openness towards each other.
Shortly afterwards, Dabu Bucher retreats to his writing room again, although he initially didn't want to discuss his new songs with the record company.
And then everything turns out well after all. At the next meeting, manager Rosa says: "The feeling that the songs are cheap is now completely gone. 100 percent!"
And the conclusion of the movie? Dabu Fantastic have just got their act together again - and not just musically; the band members also seem to have grown closer as people.
Maybe not forever, but certainly for a few more years.
