Former member of boy band One Direction, Liam Payne, has died in a fall from a hotel balcony in Argentina. He leaves behind a seven-year-old boy.
The 31-year-old singer suffered "extremely serious" injuries in the fall from the third floor of the Casa Sur hotel in the trendy Palermo district of the capital Buenos Aires.
The exact circumstances of his death are still being investigated.
Much is still unclear. The singer was in the Argentinian capital to attend a concert by his former bandmate Niall Horan.
The music world is mourning the death of singer Liam Payne. The former member of the boy band One Direction died in Buenos Aires after falling from a third-floor balcony. He was 31 years old.
Before the accidental fall, the police were sent to the Casa Sur Hotel by emergency call for an "aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol", said Pablo Policicchio, spokesman for the Ministry of Security of the city of Buenos Aires, to the AP news agency.
When the emergency services arrived, they heard a bang. Eventually they found Payne's body in the courtyard of the hotel, according to Bild.de. The singer fell 13 to 14 meters into the depths.
The online portal "tmz.com" reports that Payne behaved "erratically" in the lobby. The singer is said to have smashed his laptop there and then had to be carried to his room.
Emergency team could do nothing more
The fall is said to have occurred on Wednesday, shortly after 5 p.m. (local time), reports "bild.de".
The head of Argentina's state emergency medical system told a local TV station: "We arrived in time to try to resuscitate him. But there was nothing we could do."
A few hours before his death, he allegedly posted a love video
Just a few hours before his death, Liam Payne posted a video from Argentina. He appears relaxed and cheerful, the online magazine further reports.
The 31-year-old singer pans the camera across the room, showing palm trees and a bright blue sky through the window. "It's a beautiful day in Argentina," he says with a smile and turns the camera back to the breakfast table. Payne jokes that he is enjoying his coffee, even though it is already 1 pm.
You can hear the voice of his girlfriend, influencer Kate Cassidy, in the background. She laughs and says: "We actually sleep in until at least 12 noon every day. We are such losers!"
In a now-deleted video, Liam Payne and his girlfriend said they planned to spend the day in Argentina riding horses and playing polo. "We have some great plans for the day," Payne says with a smile. Cassidy happily adds: "We're going horse riding and playing polo later, it's going to be great!"
The clip shows the carefree mood of the couple, who are looking forward to an active and eventful day. The posts were recorded a few days ago, but were only published by him the day before the fall.
The couple arrived in Buenos Aires on September 30. The American influencer Kate Cassidy traveled back to her home country alone on October 14. Two days before Payne's fall.
Police are investigating the death
The exact circumstances of Liam Payne's death remain unclear. It is not yet known whether the fall from the balcony was an accident or a deliberate act.
The investigation is ongoing and the authorities have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Alberto Crescenti, a spokesman for the local police, explained that both an accidental fall and a suicide are being considered.
Pablo Policicchio, however, told the AP news agency that Liam Payne had "thrown himself from the balcony of his room".
