Movie Alfonso Cuarón receives lifetime achievement award in Locarno

Five-time Oscar winner Alfonso Cuarón is to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Locarno Film Festival in Ticino. The Mexican film director and screenwriter moves between low-budget films in Mexico and Hollywood blockbusters.

The award will be presented to him on Sunday, August 11 on the Piazza Grande, as announced by the Locarno Film Festival on Wednesday.

The 62-year-old Cuarón was the director of "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" (2004), "Gravity" (2013) and "Roma" (2018), among others.

The film "Jonas qui aura 25 ans en l'an 2000" (1976) by Swiss film director Alain Tanner, which was personally selected by the Mexican, will also be shown at the award ceremony. Before the screening of the film, Cuarón and Frédéric Maire, director of the Swiss Film Archive, will discuss the influence of the film on his own work and on film history in general.

The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to personalities with exceptional film careers. Past recipients include Italian film producer Renzo Rossellini (2023), Italian director Dario Argento (2021) and US actor Harrison Ford (2011).
