At the suggestion of Finance Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti, the Italian state is to mint a coin with Muti's likeness, reported the Roman daily newspaper "Il Messaggero".

Giorgetti attended the New Year's concert at the invitation of his Austrian counterpart Gunter Mayr (ÖVP). The Italian minister congratulated the 83-year-old Muti after the performance and informed him of his intention to mint the coin. Muti was delighted with the minister's visit.

Italian newspapers were effusive in their praise of Muti's performance. After the New Year's concert, Muti embarks on a US tour with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Towards the end of February, he will perform with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at La Scala in Milan.
