Camille Rast is on the World Cup podium for the first time in the slalom in Gurgl. Mikaela Shiffrin takes the win ahead of 18-year-old Albanian Lara Colturi. Wendy Holdener comes 4th.

There was no getting past Shiffrin in Gurgl either. The 29-year-old American celebrated her 99th World Cup victory at the premiere in the Ötztal, her 62nd in the slalom. She has won the last six races in which she has competed in her showpiece discipline. Shiffrin was already in the lead at the halfway point. Just like in Levi a week ago, she didn't let her good starting position slip away and won in superior style.

The podium was completed by Lara Colturi and Camille Rast, two racers who had never finished in the top 3 in the World Cup before. The Italian Colturi, competing for Albania, lost 55 hundredths to Shiffrin and made for a historic day. Albania has never before finished on the podium in the World Cup. The daughter of Olympic champion Daniela Ceccarelli, who only recently turned 18, advanced to fourth place in the first run with bib 27 and improved by another two places in the second run.

Holdener and Meillard with strong performances

Two hundredths behind Colturi, Rast celebrated her podium debut in the World Cup. The skier from Valais moved up from 5th place in the second run and knocked Wendy Holdener off the podium. The racer from Schwyz, who was only 13 hundredths behind Shiffrin at the halfway point, was 18 hundredths off third place in the end. Rast's podium finish was a logical consequence of her recent good results. In Levi, she finished fifth, just a few hundredths behind Shiffrin.

Mélanie Meillard completed the great Swiss result. After 7th place a week ago in the far north of Finland, the 26-year-old finished in the top 10 again in Gurgl. Unlike in Levi, she missed the jump to the front in the second run in the Ötztal and lost another place.

After a completely botched first run, Michelle Gisin missed out on the second run by 47 hundredths.

    Interim conclusion

Shiffrin has no problems at the women's World Cup premiere in Gurgl with bib number 1 and sets a time on the snow that none of her competitors can match. The only athlete who can keep up with the American is Wendy Holdener. The Swiss athlete is even ahead of the top favorite in the upper part of the course, but loses time in the second section and finishes just 13 hundredths behind Shiffrin.

Camille Rast is the second-best Swiss racer in 5th intermediate place, just under seven tenths behind. Mélanie Meillard can also confirm her 7th place from Levi. The skier from Neuchâtel is in 9th place after half the stint.
