As expected, the Swiss women's handball team bowed out of the European Championships with a clear defeat. In the last game of the main round in Vienna, they lost to Norway 24:40.

In their fourth game after moving from Basel to Vienna, the Swiss lost for the fourth time. After Germany, Slovenia and the Netherlands, the Olympic champions were also a size too big. The team of national coach Knut Ove Joa had qualified for the second phase of a major tournament for the first time ever.

In their seventh match in thirteen days, the Swiss were unable to produce an exploit against an overpowering opponent. They held a one-goal lead up to 4:3, but then the Norwegians pulled away with five goals in a row. The difference was already eleven goals at half-time.

After the break, the deficit remained in double figures, resulting in the highest defeat of this otherwise successful European Championship. Switzerland's top scorer was Tabea Schmid with seven goals.

Norway had already been confirmed as semi-finalists, Switzerland finished the tournament in 12th place.
