Mikaela Shiffrin is on course for her 100th World Cup victory in the giant slalom in Killington (USA). Lara Gut-Behrami (8th) is a good 1.5 seconds behind the American, who is leading at the halfway point. The best Swiss skier is Camille Rast in 4th place.
Gut-Behrami refrained from starting the giant slalom in Sölden five weeks ago after her preparation for the World Cup opener was affected by flu and knee problems. Before the second giant slalom of the season, the Ticino native announced that she was now feeling much better and that she had recently been able to train normally. The 33-year-old finished in 8th place in Killington in the state of Vermont after 31 racers started.
The best Swiss woman after half a stint is Camille Rast. The 25-year-old from Valais, who finished third on the World Cup podium for the first time a week ago in the slalom in Gurgl, Austria, is in fourth place in Killington, 0.75 seconds behind the leader, and is in the hunt for another top three finish.
Shiffrin's lead over her closest rival, Sweden's Sara Hector, is a good three tenths. Norway's Thea Louise Stjernesund is in 3rd intermediate place (0.61 back).
The podium trio from Sölden did not fare at all well in the first run. The Italian Federica Brignone, who was victorious in the Ötztal, finished in 7th place, 1.26 seconds behind. Alice Robinson from New Zealand and Julia Scheib from Austria were eliminated early in Killington.
