Marco Odermatt is once again the champion in the first run of the giant slalom in Val d'Isère. The man from Nidwalden sets the fastest time on the "Face de Bellevarde". Loic Meillard and Thomas Tumler also have podium chances after the first run.
Odermatt has won the giant slalom on the steep "Face de Bellevarde" piste three times recently, but has also been eliminated three times in this discipline. The already difficult task posed an additional challenge for the man from central Switzerland.
Odermatt reacted in grand style to the retirements at last season's finals in Saalbach, Sölden and Beaver Creek - and is likely to have nipped any doubts that may have arisen in the bud. He leads the intermediate rankings by 15 hundredths ahead of Norway's Henrik Kristoffersen and is thus the head of a strong Swiss team.
Loïc Meillard is in third place, 32 hundredths behind his team-mate. Thomas Tumler is in 6th place, 74 hundredths behind, one week after his first victory in Beaver Creek. Gino Caviezel follows in 14th place in the rankings after 30 racers, while Fadri Janutin has to worry about qualifying for the second run. Livio Simonet was eliminated.
