In "very critical condition" Muriel Furrer's serious crash overshadows junior world championship race

The World Cycling Championships in Zurich are overshadowed by a serious accident on Thursday. Swiss U19 rider Muriel Furrer crashed in the junior women's race for as yet unexplained reasons.

According to the organizers, the crash occurred in a wooded area. The 18-year-old from Zurich was flown to hospital by rescue helicopter. She suffered severe craniocerebral trauma and is in a very critical condition.

There is still no definite information about the course of the accident. Investigations by the relevant authorities are ongoing. The Union Cycliste Internationale, Swiss Cycling and the local Zurich 2024 organizing committee expressed their "extreme concern" in an initial statement.

"At the present time, there are no definite facts about the course of the accident. The investigations by the responsible authorities are ongoing. For this reason, no additional information can be provided at this time. Further explanations will follow at a later date," reads the published statement.

According to SRF, the organizing committee and the UCI will decide whether and how the World Championships will continue. They will provide further information in the coming hours.
