Young Boys also lose their sixth game in the league phase of the Champions League. After the 1:5 in Stuttgart, the Bernese can no longer reach the knockout phase in the last two rounds.

YB got off to a good start and took the lead in the 6th minute through Lukas Lakomy. However, the Swiss champions - as in their other matches in the top flight - then dropped off sharply, allowing the Bundesliga side to turn the game around in the second half.

    Meschack Elia's son has died

Meschack Elia, striker for Swiss champions YB, mourns the loss of his son. According to a statement from the club, he died unexpectedly after a short illness. The 27-year-old will travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo to join his family in mourning. The Bernese, who face Stuttgart away from home in the Champions League on Wednesday, will wear mourning florals for the match. A minute's silence will also be held before kick-off.

YB want to keep their minimal chance of progressing

Young Boys must score in the Champions League in Stuttgart on Wednesday evening to keep their slim chance of progressing. So far, the Swiss champions have lost five times in the top flight - with a devastating goal difference of 2:17. To make matters worse against Stuttgart, the Bundesliga side are also in desperate need of points after their recent 5-1 defeat away to Red Star Belgrade.

    YB delegation flies to Stuttgart

Around 3500 YB fans will be in the stadium, a club record for an away game in Europe. The vast majority of the Bernese supporters made the journey - almost 300 kilometers - by train or car (journey time: approx. 4 hours).

The YB entourage, meanwhile, took the plane (flight time: half an hour). Many YB fans criticized the choice of transport on the official Instagram channel, especially as the club usually likes to promote sustainability and environmental awareness. However, those responsible defended themselves, as reported in response to an inquiry from "20 Minuten".

"We would have liked to have traveled to Stuttgart by train," said YB media spokesman Albi Staudenmann. But because the entire Bernese delegation, including staff and the U-19 team (playing in the Youth League on Wednesday), would be over 70 people, they would have had to book a charter train, which would have been too expensive, he explains. The train would also have had to make stopovers, which would have increased the journey time to a minimum of five hours.

Nevertheless, two cars from the YB bus partner traveled to Stuttgart because, according to Stadelmann, there wasn't room for all the equipment on the plane. On site, the cars were used for the various transports.

    Stuttgart coach Hoeness demands reaction

The 5-1 defeat in Belgrade has put VfB under pressure in the top flight, and coach Sebastian Hoeness is also hoping for a reaction from his team against Young Boys. The game against the Swiss champions on Wednesday has "gained in importance" as a result, said Hoeness. He demanded "absolute focus, absolute willingness to draw this game" from his team.

After five of eight matchdays in the league phase, VfB have four points and are behind the top 24 places in the table that entitle them to progress. After YB, Slovan Bratislava and Paris Saint-Germain await. With six points from these three games, they would be "on the safe side", Hoeness calculated. He would regard reaching the play-offs as a great success.
