A total of 2.19 million people flew through Switzerland's largest airport in the month under review, as announced by the airport on Wednesday evening. This was 7.3% more than in November 2023, with passenger volumes corresponding to 98.4% of the pre-pandemic level of November 2019.
At 1.61 million, 7.7% more passengers traveled on European flights. The number of passengers on intercontinental flights climbed by 6.3% to just under 576,300.
At the same time, 5 percent more flights were operated. While the number of passenger flights increased, cargo and business aviation suffered a decline.
At the same time, aircraft capacity utilization increased. On average, 129 passengers were on board, which was 0.6 percent more than in November last year. This means that 77 out of 100 seats were occupied. This was around 1 seat more than a year ago.
More transit passengers
The increase in the number of passengers was primarily due to local passengers. Their number rose by 8.0 percent to 1.50 million travelers. There was also an increase of 5.8 percent to 694,000 transfer passengers.
However, commercial revenue only benefited slightly from the additional passengers: this amounted to CHF 45.8 million in November. This was 0.6 percent more than in the same month last year.
The majority of this was attributable to the stores behind the security checkpoint, the so-called airside, where sales rose by 3.5 percent to 25.1 million francs. In contrast, sales on the landside fell by 2.7 percent to 20.7 million.
