Economics Minister Guy Parmelin will be Vice-President of the Federal Council next year. Parliament elected the SVP politician from Vaud on Wednesday with 196 out of 219 valid votes. This means Parmelin is likely to become President of the Swiss Confederation for the second time in 2026.

23 votes went to other people. Parmelin was already President of the Swiss Confederation in 2021. The 65-year-old was elected to the Federal Council in December 2015 and was initially Minister of Defense. In 2019, he moved to head the Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research (EAER).
