For the Council of States, the federal government must quickly create the legal basis for signature collections to take place via digital channels in future. On Wednesday, it adopted a motion to this effect, which will now go to the National Council.

The motion on the introduction of so-called "e-collecting" comes from Glarus FDP member of the Council of States Benjamin Mühlemann. In his motion, he refers to the so-called "signature scam" that became known in the fall. This refers to the alleged fraud surrounding the paid collection of signatures by companies commissioned to do so.

Mühlemann writes that the current system of signing signature forms by hand on paper and having them certified by the municipalities, usually by hand, is "outdated, inefficient, prone to errors and enables abuses". The collection and verification process should now be digitalized.
